Hair Colour Skin Bad ReactionSkin testing is vitally important prior to having your hair coloured. This is due to the potential risks associated with an active ingredient found in most hair dyes, known as ‘PPD’ (paraphenylenediamine).

PPD has been proven to cause allergic reactions to hypersensitive individuals, causing very uncomfortable symptoms such as blistering of the skin, infection and soft tissue swelling (as pictured).

Hypersensitivity can be quite common. It is an over reaction of the immune system to what is known as an ‘invading’ hapten, such as PPD. Haptens have the ability to provoke an immune response that brings about such dramatic changes in the body’s tissues (known as an allergic response or allergy).

In extremely severe cases reactions can be life threatening and these allergic responses can develop at any time. The simplest way to avoid such nasty complications is to have a skin test at Partners Hair, Dundee!

[accordion-item tag=”h2″ title=”I have been dyeing my hair for many years and have never had an allergic reaction. Why should I have a test now?”]
You can become hypersensitive at any stage.  Some people may suffer from allergies all of a sudden, hay fever for example, or latex. You can develop sensitivities at any time in your life.[/accordion-item]
[accordion-item tag=”h2″ title=”I am taking medication – will this make me more sensitive to hair colours & dyes?”]
It has been found that medication can indeed vary your reactions to hair dye. Some may suppress any existing hypersensitivity, some may make you hypersensitive.[/accordion-item]
[accordion-item tag=”h2″ title=”Why do I have to test 48 hours before the application of hair dye?”]
In some cases, the most severe version of hypersensitivity is a cell mediated reaction – this can take at least 48 hours to occur.[/accordion-item]

Skin Testing Policy for Bleached Hair

*PLEASE NOTE* THERE IS NO SKIN TEST FOR SENSITIVITY TO BLEACH THAT WE CAN PERFORM

Each individual has a different sensitivity or tolerance to scalp bleaching. Different factors such as skin type (dry/oily etc), room temperature and temperature of the person’s scalp all play a part in how bleach works.

It is completely normal to feel an itching or tingling sensation, even a little heat when bleach is first applied to your scalp so try not to be too alarmed. If you feel any MAJOR discomfort during the bleaching process, please inform your Partners Hair stylist IMMEDIATELY.

Partners Hair STRONGLY ADVISE a skin test before we colour your hair. If you are adamant that you would not like to undergo a skin test, we will ask you to sign a disclaimer as a last resort. This will state that you waive any responsibility for any reactions at Partners Hair Salon.
